Abstract

Linings.-An upwardly-tapering collapsable core for use in lining crucible holes for crucible furnaces is built up of separate segmental sections a, b, detachably secured together along their longitudinal edges. As shown, the sections are provided at each end with angle-iron strips c, those on alternate sections being formed with apertured projections d which over-lie the strips c on adjacent sections and are secured thereto by rods f. Tie-rods h, engaging in holes i in the strips c, mav be provided and the rod f may be formed on the upper ends with lifting-eyes g and be screw-threaded at the lower parts to receive securing-nuts. The corners of those sections whose edges are disposed on the outer surface of the core are chamfered as shown at j. The core may be provided with a top and bottom and with additional lifting-hooks p. A modification is described in which the sections are provided along their vertical edges with strips carrying apertured lugs adapted to register with one another and receive the rods f. In a further construction these vertical strips carry pivoted catches adapted to engage projections on horizontal strips secured to the sections.
