A safety razor having a thin flexible blade has the central region 10<1> of the blade rigidly clamped. The cutting edges 11 of the blade are spaced away from the teeth 8 of the usual guard 2 to provide spaces '20 into which lather &c. can pass. The central clamping may be effected between the cover 1 and a metal plate 22 having a central rib 23 and disposed between the guard and blade. The rib may bear against the guard as shown or against the blade In another form the plate has its longitudinal edges folded over to form marginal beads or ribs which may be continuous or interrupted and may be used without, or in conjunction with, the central rib. In further modifications the ribs may be replaced by rows or groups of projections provided on the plate. Fig. 14 shows one such modification in which clamping projections 55, 56 are provided on a plate the edges 59 of which are folded over to embrace the edges of the guard member, on to which the plate is slid, the plate also having rows of rounded projections 60 which project towards the cutting-edges of the blade and function as guard teeth. In further modifications the separate clamping plate is omitted, and suitable clamping projections are provided on the guard member or on the blade. Fig. 19 shows a guard 2 in which bodies 81 of spherical or other form rotatably mounted to act as rollers are used in place nf guard teeth.
