255,216. Cox, F. J., Edmunds, H., Tulloch, T. G., and Millner, G. E. June 29, 1925. Yarns, gassing and singeing. - Materials such as yarn &c. are singed by being passed over surface combustion burners. As shown, the material is passed over the incandescent surfaces of rows 2<e>, 2<f> of surface combustion burners, each burner consisting of a gas chamber having a cover of fire-clay &c. Jets of air are directed by a pipe 7 on to the material so as to prevent injury thereto. The speed of travel of the material and its distance from the heating-surfaces may be varied. In a modification, the material is passed between two surposed rows of burners, the heating-surfaces of which are opposite to each other.
