Abstract

Cylinder ends, putting into communication.- In a bye-pass valve for locomotive cylinders, the casing is connected at b to the cylinder, at c to a pipe connecting it to a similar valve casing at the other end of the cylinder; and at m to the valve-chest. The valve d is a cylindrical beat valve, engages a seat e, slides in the casing a, and is guided by a stationary piston f which is provided with a bore connected to the atmosphere or to a source of pressure air or steam. If the throttle is open, the valve is held closed by the steam pressure in space l unless steam or air under pressure is supplied to space k by the operator. If the throttle is closed, the cylinder pressure together with the atmospheric pressure which has access to space k will open the valve and connect the cylinder ends.
