Flyer frames; winding-machines; spindle apparatus; building-motions; spindle-driving apparatus; thread guides.-Filaments exuded from nozzles, for example in the manufacture of artificial silk, are wound upon conical bobbins 13 arranged to have a predetermined and practically uniform " take-up " unaffected by the speed of discharge from the nozzles, and are twisted and wound upon parallel or conical bobbins by means of a flyer so mounted that the bobbin may be removed without removing the flyer. For twisting the filaments a flyer 12, driven by a pinion 11 from a shaft 3, is carried by a sleeve 7 which is reciprocated to lay the filament by a fork 14, the bobbin-spindle 4, or a group of spindles, being moved longlitudinally to build the bobbin by means of a pinion 20 which engages a rack 17<3> on a slide 17. The bobbin-spindle is splined in a pinion 9 by which it is driven, and is connected by a clutch 19 with the slide 17. The pinion 20 is frictionally driven by a shaft 21, so that the slide 17 may be drawn forward by a handle 17<2> to commence the winding on an empty bobbin. The bobbin-spindle is driven at the speed necessary to give the required twist, and, by preference, the flyer is driven a less speed to ensure the required " take-up '' and such speed is varied in accordance with the diameter at which winding is taking place. When winding only, the flyer is omitted, and the bobbin is driven at a variable speed to ensure a uniform " tale-up." The filaments are led over a guide roller 22, which may be stationary or rotating to assist the travel of the filaments and may be used as a lap roller.
