Abstract
254,210. Davis, R. H., and Briggs, H. Jan. 14, 1926. Wheel base, changing length of.-In a carriage, bogie, or other vehicle supported on pairs of wheels, the wheel axles are movable in guides by means operated by common hand-control so that the distance between them can be varied to a substantial extent to provide a short wheel base for negotiating sharp turns or a long wheel base to give stability. The axles d, d' mounted in longitudinal guides e on the carriage frame, are connected by links i to cranks h, h<1> on crossshafts f. f<1> carrying inter-engaging gear-wheels j, the shaft f<1> being rotated by a hand lever k. By moving the lever k in the direction of the arrow, the axles are drawn together. The free end of the lever carries a sliding bolt l having a key o and weighted handle n. In the position shown in Fig. 6, the key o engages a keyway in the end of the lever which is free for rotation. The bolt may be. moved inwards so that the key o is disengaged from the lever, the bolt being engaged beneath the guide e or in an aperture m according as the wheels are adjusted for a long or short wheel base respectively, the key and key-way being held out of register by the weighted handle n. The invention is particularly described in connection with an ambulance carriage for use in mines. In a modification, the axles are moved by a right and left hand screw arranged longitudinally of the carriage and provided with a hand-crank at either end.
