286,809. Godfrey, A. Dec. 21, 1926. Dividing by fusion.-The carriage of an oxyacetylene or other jet cutting machine of the kind in which a blowpipe is supported for motion in a plane and is traversible along a slideway, is clamped to and traversed by an endless band having a straight length in proximity to and parallel to the slideway, and continuously driven in a selected direction. A girder e, which is secured to a structure b supporting a template d for the bogies of a railway wagon and bolted to standards a, a', a<2>, forms a guideway for a carriage f which may be clamped to an endless steel band s driven by one or more gears or friction discs so as to provide a variable speed drive. The carriage has a transverse girder g on which is freely guided a blowpipe carriage h which is provided with a pin i held in contact with the template by springs or by a weiaht l and card. The carriage f has a projection v overlapping the band and is clamped to the band by a lever u on the carriage operated by a hand-adjusted cam w carried by the girder g. The lever u has an offset y with a pad z which may be pulled by a, spring y<1> towards a flange e<1> on the girder when the cam is withdrawn, so as to decelerate and clamp the carriage f thereto, or to leave the carriage free. Two sets of levers operated by the cam or a pair of geared cams may be used to clamp the carriage to either of the straight portions of the band. The carriage h may also be driven, when both carriages are free, by a device as described in Specification 241,269 connected by a flexible driving cable to the driving mechanism for the band, the gears and motor being carried on a portable truck or separate slide.
