[Patent of Addition to No. 5488, A.D. 1908.] Excavating.-Relates to improvements in the excavating-apparatus described in Specification No. 5488, A.D. 1908, in which a rigid guide-rail carries a slide provided with a rotating cutting-tool. Two carriages 1, 2, running on rails 3, 4 at the bottom and top of the working respectively, support by a link 6 and guide 8 a rigid guide-rail 9 carrying a tool slide 10. The guide-rail is moved to or from the working-face, and the tool slide 10 traversed along the rail, as described in the above-mentioned Specification. Means are provided for enabling the carriages 1, 2 to travel around sharp curves in the rails. The carriage 1 runs on two pairs of rails 3 ; on each pair of rails are three bogie frames 37, the middle bogie frames having slight lateral play. The six bogie frames support the carriage 1. The carriage 2 is mounted on two bogie frames 38. The cutting-tool mounted on the tool slide 10 may comprise a disk 40, Fig. 7, rotated by suitable means and carrying cutters 41. Several of these rotating cutter disks may be mounted on the tool slide 10. In another form the tool slide is divided into two parts 42, 43, Fig. 9, the front part 43 being adapted to be turned on the back part 42 and clamped thereon in any desired position. Rotating cutter disks may be mounted on the front part 43; or a cutter chain 19 may be carried by rollers 17, 18 driven by suitable means: In the form of the apparatus shown in Fig. 11, the guide-rail 9 has no movement independent of the carriage, the movement of the cutting-tool 46 to or from the working face being effected by mounting the tool adjustably on a shaft 47. In a modification of this form, the tool slide carries a part adjustable towards the working face; on this part a cutter roller is' journaled, the cutter being rotated by an electric motor and chain gearing.
