Abstract

5488. Wischow, E. March 19, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Excavating.-In an excavating-apparatus of the type in which rotating cutting-tools are caused to slide up and down a rigid guide-rail which can be moved laterally along the working face, the guide - rail is connected to two travelling carriages, one at the top and one at the bottom of the working face and moving parallel therewith, the connexions being such that the rail can be moved to or from the working face. In the form shown, the rotating cutting-tools are carried on a slide 10 moving on a guide-rail 9 connected by links 6,8 with carriages 1, 2 running on rails 3, 4 at the bottom and top, respectively, of the working face. Chain tackles 11, 12 are provided to support the guide-rail and move it parallel to itself to or from the working face. Additional sliding supports 13, 14 may be provided. The slide 10 carries, by means of rollers 17, 18, Fig. 2, a band 19 furnished with cutters 20, the roller 18 being driven, preferably, by an electric motor 21. The tool slide is moved along the guide-rail by an endless rope 22 led over rollers 23, 24 at the ends of a rail and a windlass on the upper carriage. The link 6 carries, at the end next the guide-rail, the front roller 28 of a bucket chain 25, which conveys away the material hewn down. Each bucket is provided with a cutter. Excavated material is delivered by the bucket chain to a shoot 29 leading to a travelling band 30 delivering to a movable hopper 32. The Specification in the original form, as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a), includes also the subject-matter of Specification No. 17,147, A.D. 1908 ; this subject matter does not appear in the Complete Specification as accepted.
