Abstract
252,433. Roberts, T. F., and Reeder, G. A. Feb. 21, 1925. Steering and balancing.-An aeroplane has its wings and a tail plane simultaneously adjustable about horizontal transverse axes, the tail plane also having an independent adjustment about the longitudinal axis of the machine. Means for locking the wings and leaving the tail plane to be used independently may be provided. The wings are mounted on a transverse shaft 2 which carries two chain wheels 4 connected by chains 5 to wheels 6 on a transverse shaft 7 which is connected through chain gearing 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15 to a handle 16. The shaft 2 has a chain wheel 17 connected by a crossed chain 18 to a wheel 19 on a shaft 20 journaled in a cap 21 on the end of the fuselage. The tail plane 22 is secured to this shaft 20 and flexible extensions 36 extend between loops 35 on this shaft and spring connections 37 on the fuselage. The cap 21 rotates on ball bearings in the end of the fuselage and has a toothed rim 23 engaged by a gear wheel on a vertical shaft having a second wheel 26 connected by a chain 27 to a wheel 28 on a vertical shaft 29. This shaft is connected by the chain gearing shown to a second shaft 33 provided with a hand wheel 34. Cords and grooved pulleys may be used instead of chains and chain wheels.
