Abstract

296,736. Villiers, C. A. April 4, 1927. Propelling; steering and balancing.-Paddle wheels of the kind in which blades are mounted on a rotary support and are constrained by springs to remain parallel, are constructed with sets of blades each composed of a number of planes having individual spring controlled pivotal motions. The plane elements may be mounted on torsion spindles held at one end by the carrier for holding the planes in the parallel position. Sets of planes 2a are pivotally mounted on axes 3b under spring restraint, these axes being mounted in a frame 3a itself pivoted on an axis 3 carried by a main frame 1. The axes 3 are cranked at 6 and coupled to a crank 8 on a spindle 9. The spindle 9 may be adjusted for altering the phase of the paddle positions. When employed for balancing aeroplanes the paddle set is mounted at or near the tip of each win, the axis of rotation being horizontal and at right angles to the direction of flight. The control shafts 9 are operable by the pilot or an automatic balancing gear may be incorporated.
