Resistance furnaces. -An annealing-furnace using an inert atmosphere comprises a heating bell 1 making a joint with an oil bath 3 in a charge supporting base, and a protecting bell 3 fitting into a sand seal 8 and within which the charge is allowed to cool after removal of the heating bell. The latter may be stationary and the charged bell 3 inserted and removed from below or, as shown, the base supporting the charge 2 and bell 3 may be fixed and the cover 1 movable. Inert gas is supplied to and discharged from the space 4 and the bell 3 through pipes 5, and ports 9, 10 respectively. On completion of the heating period the gas is withdrawn from the space 4 and delivered to another furnace or to a storage vessel, and the hot cover 1 is removed to another freshly-charged bell 3 and replaced by a cold cover. As the cooling proceeds, inert gas from a storage vessel is supplied to the interior of the bell 3 to maintain atmospheric pressure and so prevent entry of air. The cooling may be acceleratedby circulating inert gas through the bell 3 and either a cooling device or another furnace.
