Actuated or applied by running axle or wheel; band; blocks acting on drums. - A metal band, or a series of hinged segments, covering or covered bv the brake segments is interposed between the latter and the brake drum, whereby the braking action is increased by movement of the band with the drum, the movement of the band in either direction being limited by a stop disposed either on the drum cover plate or on one of the brake segments. As shown in Fig. 1. the segments 5, 6, pivoted at 8 and adapted to be actuated by a cam 7, are recessed at 11 to receive the reinforced ends 2, 3 of the band 1, which are adapted to coact with a fixed. stop 10. The pivot 8 of the two segments may be free, and the segment 6 then be longer than the segment 5; in the latter case the segment 5 only is actuated by the cam and the segment 6 is provided with a fixed pivot adjacent the cam. Or three freely hinged segments may be employed, the two end segments being both actuated by the cam; or one only being actuated by the cam, and the other having a fixed pivot adjacent the cam. Or a single, band may replace the segments and have. one end fixed or be cam-actuated at each end thereof. As shown in Fig. 8, the cam shaft and the pivot of the shoes mav be supported in a rocking member 37 so that when the drum is rotating in the direction of the arrow and the brake is applied, the member 37 turns in an anticlockwise. direction to apply a second brake through a connection 39. When the drum rotates in the opposite direction, movement of the member 37 is prevented by a stop 48. Fig. 9 shows the application to an external contracting brake, the band 1 being disposed within the segments 5, 6 and being adapted to coact with a stop 10 supported by a bracket 40.
