Abstract

Regenerators.-For preventing mixing of gas and air due to leakages in regenerative air heaters having movable heating elements, one or more intermediate chambers are provided between the air space and the gas space, which chambers may be placed under a pressure different from that in the air and gas spaces. As shown applied to a locomotive smoke box in which rotating discs 3 project partly into the gas flue 1 through which the hot combustion gases pass to the funnel 2 under the action of the blast pipe 5, 7, and partly into the air flue 4 through which the combustion air entering at 17 is conveyed to the fire-box, the gas and air spaces are separated by a chamber 11 formed by two dividing walls 13 and exhausted by the blast nozzle 5. The walls 13 comprise bars extending between the rotating discs 3 which are mounted on a shaft 12 driven by gearing 8, 9 and cone drive 15 from a wheel axle 14 of the locomotive. The belt of the cone drive may be adjusted by a belt fork 16 operated by the valve gear of the engine to regulate the heat exchange in accordance with the admission of steam to the engine.
