Abstract
250,722. Buhtz, E. Feb. 26, 1925. Toluene sulphochlorides; o-toluene sulphonamide.-In the production of a mixture of o- and ptoluene sulphochloride by reaction between chlorsulphonic acid and toluene, the reagents are brought into contact with each other and are agitated together on a substantially horizontal surface which is rotated at a low speed; a suitable rate of rotation is 30 revolutions per minute. The rotating surface may be heated or cooled, may be combined with distributing means, and may have corrugations or channels. As shown in Fig. 1, the reagents are fed through concentric tubes Z<1>, Z<2> to the rotating surface S<1>, conduits H, K being provided for the supply of cooling fluids: the products are withdrawn at E. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the rotating surface S<1> is combined with a smaller surface S<2>, which may be rotatable, and with distributing rings R', R<2>. The treatment of o-toluene sulphochloride with ammonia solution may be carried out in the same way.
