Abstract
1343447 Treating liquids with gases BRIDGESTONE TIRE - KK and MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK 15 June 1971 [15 June 1970] 27935/71 Heading B1R [Also in Division C3] Apparatus for carrying out a gas-liquid contact reaction comprises a horizontal cylindrical reactor 3 surrounded by a cooling jacket 5, two driving shafts 1 in the reactor rotatable in opposite directions and each being provided with members 2 projecting therefrom, the members on the respective shafts being staggered and arranged to overlap. In use a solution of a high molecular weight polymer of high viscosity dissolved in a solvent of high volatility may be charged into the reactor through an inlet 6, and a reactive gas charged through an inlet 8 so that when the drive shaft 1 and members 2 are rotated shear mixing takes place to constantly renew the gas-liquid surface and allow a steady gas-liquid reaction to take place. Solvent evaporated by the heat of reaction is condensed and runs down the cooled side walls of the reactor to be drawn back into solution and a raised base 17 may be provided to aid this process whereby condensed solvent is gathered into the solution by the rotating members 2. The driving shafts are inclined towards an outlet 7 to move the solution towards the outlet, and a scraper 18 is provided adjacent the outlet to remove solution from the projections 2. Alternatively the projections 2 are inclined towards the shaft, or feeding grooves provided on the base of the reactor to move the polymer solution.
