Abstract

<PICT:0679891/III/1> <PICT:0679891/III/2> Apparatus for contacting immiscible or partially immiscible liquids of the type described and claimed in Specification 659,241 wherein the tubular container has two or more rotatable shafts parallel to the said axis each carrying a number of disc-shaped rotary baffles, each baffle on one shaft being substantially coplanar with a baffle on the other shaft or with baffles on the other shafts and being situated substantially midway between adjacent fixed baffles. As shown, a cylindrical tube 1 is provided with four rotatable shafts 2a, 2b, 2c and 2d symmetrically arranged in the tube and each having horizontal rotary discs 3 fitted at the same level as the corresponding rotary discs on the other shafts. Stator rings 4 are fixed to the internal wall of the tube 1 at points midway between the rotary discs 3. Inlets 5 and 6 for heavy and light liquids respectively, e.g. oil and a selective solvent therefor, and corresponding outlets 7 and 8 are provided in the tube. Adjacent rotors are driven in opposite directions to that at any point of the surface of contact between the vortex systems generated by neighbouring rotors the liquid flows in the same direction and at the same speed. Rotors generating vortex systems having an adverse effect on each other are situated as far as possible apart and preferably screened. Thus, as shown, a four sided prismatic body 9 having concave faces is inserted coaxially in the tube with its corners pointing towards the spaces between adjacent rotary baffles. The body may be provided with flat baffles projecting therefrom at the same level as the stator baffles. An arrangement with twelve rotors, Fig. 7, (not shown) has for screens radial partitions in addition to the prismatic body. Apparatus for two solvent extraction has the inlet for the material to be extracted between the inlet ports for the solvents, which are near the top and bottom of the column respectively; and uniform loading is retained by making the diameter of the rotary baffles in the vicinity of the feed inlet of the material to be extracted smaller than elsewhere. The apparatus is suitable for the solvent extraction of mineral or fatty oils and for chemical reactions, e.g. sulphuric acid or olefines.
