Abstract

A process for the manufacture of sulphamic acid from urea, sulphuric acid and sulphur trioxide comprises effecting the reaction between the reactants under conditions such that no substantial continuous body of liquid is present and while the reaction mixture is in film contact with a temperature controlled surface, e.g., one or more revolving drums, hollow rollers, or endless belts. The reactants may be (a) added to grinding zones of high speed grinding mills wherein the grinding faces are supplied with cooling means, (b) coated on separate revolving drums provided with cooling means, the reaction being effected at their line of contact, and the material being scraped off being, if required, further mixed with cooling, (c) premixed with adequate cooling and fed into the line of apposition of two revolving drums, or (d) added to a temperature-controlled mass of finely divided solid, e.g., dry pulverulent sulphamic acid crystals or unreacted urea crystals, which may also be used as diluents. The reactants are employed in substantially stoichiometric proportions and the reaction is effected between 150 DEG and 250 DEG F. Specification 576,739 is referred to. The Provisional Specification describes temperature control by the use of internally cooled mixer arms or water-jacketed walls of a mixer. or by causing the liquid components to film over or to be otherwise dispersed upon the surface of a suitably temperature controlled solid in which case a dough or ribbon type mixer may be used. Reference is also made to the conversion of sulphamic acid to its salts, e.g., ammonium sulphamate.
