Abstract
Alpha-naphthylamine is nitrated by adding a mixture of concentrated nitric acid and concentrated sulphuric acid to a solution of alpha-naphthylamine in concentrated sulphuric acid, maintaining the temperature of the reaction mixture between -10 DEG C. and -25 DEG C. while the reactants are being mixed together, and providing constant, vigorous agitation. To facilitate mixing the nitration mixture is added as a fine spray. The formation of tars and decomposition products is minimized by removing the nitro-naphthylamines from the nitrating agent promptly, and this is done by pouring the mixture on to crushed ice. The 5-nitro-1-naphthylamine sulphate is precipitated, and the 8-nitro-1-naphthylamine sulphate is recovered from the ice-water slurry. In the example yields of 60.5 per cent of 5-nitro-1-naphthylamine and 33.2 per cent of 8-nitro-1-naphthylamine are obtained.
