Abstract
1455753 Preparation of p-quinones SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 8 Jan 1974 00803/74 Heading C2C A process for the preparation of a p-quinone comprises the reaction of oxygen with a phenol having in relation to the phenolic hydroxyl group thereof: (i) a free para position or a para position occupied by a further hydroxyl group and (ii) at least one free ortho position and in which any substituents are inert, i.e. remain intact during the process according to the invention, except the said hydroxyl group(s) in the presence of an inert polar aprotic solvent having at least two carbon atoms per molecule, using as catalyst a cobalt diamine chelate consisting of cobalt and an organic quadridentate chelating molecule with two imine chelating sites. Generally the starting phenol concentration is between 100 and 1250 millimol per litre solvent and the cobalt chelate concentration between 1 and 100 millimol per litre solvent.
