Abstract

1,177,183. Polyarylene polyethers. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 12 May, 1967, No. 22219/67. Heading C3R. Polyarylene polyethers are prepared by condensing an alkali metal mono salt of a halophenol having an inert electron withdrawing group in the ortho and/or para positions to the halogen atom under anhydrous conditions in an organic solvent of formula where R is a monovalent hydrocarbon group free of aliphatic unsaturation on the alpha carbon atom, or the two Rs may be linked and may be a divalent alkylene group. The salt of the halophenol may be formed in situ, and water may be removed from the reaction mixture by azeotropic distillation. In examples, polymers are obtained from the potassium salts of p-(pchlorophenylsulphonyl) phenol, p - (p - fluorobenzoyl) phenol, 3 - nitro - 4 - chlorophenol, p - (p - fluorophenylazo) phenol and p - (pfluorophenylsulphonyl) phenol, the salts being prepared in situ, and the solvent being tetramethylene sulphone (sulpholane).
