248,360. Aluminum Co. of America, (Assignees of Horsfield, B. T.). March 2, 1925, [Convention date]. Abrading and sharpening compositions.- Alumina is converted into hollow globules and purified by injecting a gas at high velocity into a stream of the molten oxide. A crude material such as clay or bauxite may be melted with enough carbon to reduce the iron, titanium, and silicon to an alloy and leave a small excess of carbon, say 1 per cent, in the alumina, the alumina being then treated with a jet of air or steam as above described. The excess of carbon is oxidized, leaving the alumina globules substantially pure. The globular product may be used as an abrasive.
