Abstract

Balancing moving parts by weights.-A sixteen cylinder engine has its cylinders arranged in four groups each group consisting of four cylinders A - - D equi-spaced around the shaft, the pistons of each group being connected to one throw of the crank shaft b. The four throws are in one plane alternate throws being at 180‹. Balance weights f are also in the same plane as the crank throws; they are arranged at the ends of the shaft either on the end throw or on the shaft, but at 180‹ to the contiguous throw. As shown in Fig. 1, the upper set of eight cylinders are spaced apart at the centre and the lower ones are brought together in order to stagger the cylinders in each group, so that the connecting rod of each piston is in the plane of the corresponding cylinder axis.
