Alkali hyposulphites and thiosulphates.-In the production of alkali hyposulphite from alkali bisulphite and alkali amalgam, alkali thiosulphate is formed by further redluction, and may be itself further reduced to polythionates, these salts being freely soluble and tending to accumulate in the mother liquor. To avoid this accumulation, which uses up a part of the alkali amalgam, a part of the mother liquor is withdrawn periodically or continuously and is replaced by water or a salt solution such as a solution of sodium chloride, with small addition of bisulphite if desired.
