Abstract

246,981. Ashmore, Benson, Pease & Co., Ltd., Rutherford, T. A., and Pickles, H. J. Jan. 6, 1925. Hasp fastenings; clamps, eccentric.-Covers, such as for manholes, with resilient packing material, are fastened with pressure by an eccentric forming part of a lever and turning in a strap adjustably mounted on a rod pivoted on the manhole rim, the lever having a rocking- surface for engaging the covers to apply the pressure. The strap c is adjustably screwed to the rod b pivoted at a to the manhole rim. A disc d through which the square spindle e passes eccentrically, turns in the strap. An operating lever f has a bifurcated end engaging the spindle and the bifurcation is enlarged at one side to form the rocking-surfaces f<1>. To secure the manhole cover, the device is swung over to bring the surfaces f<1> into engagement with the cover, and the lever f pressed down so that the surfaces f<1>, acting as cams, press the cover on to its seating and compress the resilient packing. A stop g engages the strap c to limit the swing of the lever f, and notches f<2> in the surfaces f<1> prevent the lever from being swung too far over, when released, by engaging the edge of the cover.
