Electric braking. - A hoisting and lowering motor 5 is controlled by a braking switch 9 in conjunction with a resistance varying switch 7 and a timing relay 10, the arrangement being such that the sequence of resistance changes during graduated rheostatic braking varies from the sequence employed in acceleration owing to the action of a switch 6 which short circuits a part of the last resistance section. With the motor in the rheostatic braking loop, Fig. 2, the cumulative action of the relay coils 11, 12 keeps the actuating coil of the switch 6 de-energized until steady conditions are attained, after which the relay is opened automatically and the final portion of the resistance brought into use to give maximum lowering velocity.
