Abstract

244,716. Wilkening, L. G. Dec. 17, 1924, [Convention date]. Making and finishing bricks.-Peat, marsh soil, or the like, or a mixture of materials containing vegetable mould, is treated with a very dilute aqueous solution of a haloid salt of an alkali metal or ammonium, the resulting chemical action imparting to the peat water-repelling properties and protecting it against ignition. Other fire-preventing materials such as boric and phosphoric salts may be added. In an example, a 5 per cent solution of lithium chloride is added to finely divided peat or marsh soil or mixture of both, and the excess is squeezed out. The pressed block is dried in the air or by artificial heat. Other materials may be mixed with the peat or separately treated with the salts and an extract prepared from peat, a binder being inessential.
