Abstract
243,755. Klein, M. Nov. 28, 1924, [Convention date]. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Propelling by rotary cylinders.-In ships with cylindrical propellers rotating in the air or water flowing past the vehicle the direction of the fluid stream is changed through about 90‹ as in the conduit a before it passes the rotating cylinder b, so that as the resultant force on the axis of the cylinder is perpendicular to the direction of flow, on the Magnus principle, this force acts in the direction of motion of the vehicle. The cylinder b is rotated by any reversible mechanical device, which may be driven by the fluid stream past the vehicle. The conduit a may be arranged entirely in a horizontal plane, the cylinder axis being vertical in this case. Two or more cylinders may be employed, and it is stated that propellers other than cylinders may be used. As applied to ships both the air stream and the water stream past the ship may be used.
