Aug. 23, 1924 Pistons; cooling; attaching to rod; pistonrods. - In a piston for an internal-combustion engine having metal block ends A<1>, A<2> and a water or oil cooled body, the ends are partially cooled by fusible metal or granular metal of high conductivity, contained in spaces C<1>, C<2> between the ends and the cooled piston body. Fusible metal may also be contained in the space between the piston-rod D<1> and the cast-iron protective sleeve F. The piston body comprises two parts B<2>, B<3>, bolted to a flange d on the pistonrod, to which the sleeve F is also secured. The ends A<1>, A<2> are secured to the body portions by bolts a<1>, and the space between the body portions is enclosed by a sectional skirt G. The joints between the blocks A<1>, A<2> and the body may be ground, or may be made by metal washers. The joint between the sleeve F and the portion B<3> is made by split rings f. The cooling fluid passes by pipes E, e<3> to the portion B<2> and by a pipe e<1> to the portion B<3>, and returns by a pipe e and the hollow piston-rod. A singleacting piston is similarly constructed, the fluidcooled body being in two concentric parts, which, together with the block A<1>, are secured to the piston-rod flange by the bolts a<1>.
