Abstract

Pistons; cooling; attaching to rod; piston - rods. - In the piston of an internalcombustion engine expanding rings are employed for conducting heat both from a central heat - resisting mass and from a sleeve surrounding the pistonrod. The heat-resisting mass B fits, with the clearance to allow for expansion, into the annular water-cooled end a of the piston. Expanding rings U serve for packing and to conduct the heat. Expanding rings C<1> are similarly interposed between the piston-rod D and a sleeve E surrounding it and similar rings e are interposed between the sleeve E and the water-cooled end a<5> of the piston. A flange on the end of the piston-rod D is secured between two water-cooled bodies a<6>, which close the water spaces in the parts a, a<5>, and are secured to those parts bv bolts securing also the end B and the sleeve E. Water supplied by a pipe c in the piston-rod passes to the water spaces in the parts a<6>, which are connected by a pipe, and to the parts a, a<5>. The central part of the piston is closed by a sleeve a<7> in parts bolted together. A single-acting piston is similarly constructed.
