UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GRANVILLE EASTWOOD BRADSHAW, OF HERSHAM, WALTON-ON-THAMES, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO A. B. C. MOTORS (1920) LIMITED, OF HERSHAM, WALTON-ON-THAMES,
ENGLAND.
INTERNAL-COMBUSTION-ENGINE CYLINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 20, 1920. Serial No. 404,916.
BRADSHAW, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland. residing at A. B. C.
Motor \Vorks, Hersham, VValton-on-Thames, in the county of Surrey, England. have invented new and useful Improvements in Internal Combustion Engine Cylinders. ot' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in internal combustion engine cylinders which have for their main object to maintain an even temperature over that part of the cylinder barrel or cylinder proper in which the working stroke of the piston occurs, inequalities of temperature tending to distort the cylinder and cause leakage'past the piston. Other subsidiary objects or advantages secured by the invention are general reduction of the temperature of the cylinder proper and of the weight of the complete cylinder. low cost in manufacture and ab sence of joints or sleeves through which heat has to be radiated outward. such as for instance, in the case of a cast-iron or steel liner pressed into an aluminium or copper shell. According to the invention a sleeve or ring of material having good heat conductivity such as aluminium or copper is interposed between the cylinder head and the cylinder proper. The cylinder head may be of cast-iron and as this material is of poor heat conductivity, is liable to remain hot near the exhaust valve and cool near the inlet valve. Before reaching the cylinder barrel, however. the heat passes through the aluminium or copper sleeve. in which it is distributed more evenly owing to its good conducting power, and thus the temperature of the cylinder barrel is maintained more uniform than heretofore. v
Further details of the invention will be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings in whichsleeve or ring.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, the cylinder head 1 may be made of cast iron and have integrally formed with it the inlet and exhaust valve seats and parts and other usualfittings, or be made of aluminium with suitable valve seats inserted in known manner. In either case it is preferably provided with ribs 2 to assist cooling. The cylinder barrel or cylinder proper 3. within which the piston 4 works may be made of steel or other suitable material and as shown does Patented Mar. 15, 1921.
not extend appreciably above the top of the piston when this is at the top of thestroke.
It is as usual provided with ribs 5 for cooling purposes.
Between the cylinder head 1 and the barrel 3 is provided a sleeve or ring 6 made of material of good heat conductivity, preferably copper or aluminium, and this may have fins such as 7 to assist in dissipating heat. The sleeve or ring may be spigoted as shown at 8 and 9 respectively into the cylinder barrel and cylinder head (or vice versa) and the parts may be bolted together or fixed in any known manner to take the stress due to the explosion.
In Fig. 2, the member 6 is shown as a thin rin'g between thecylinder head 1 and the cylinder barrel 3, jointing rings or washers 10 being used to insure a pressure-tight joint.
It is obvious, of course. that many modifications may be made in the details of the invention.
I claim 1. A cylinder for internal combustion engines comprising an integral cast metal barrel, a cast metal head having intake and exhaust valves mounted therein. and a sleeve between said barrel and head. said sleeve being of metal of a higher conductivity than said barrel and head.
i 2. In an internal combustion engine cylinder, an integral cast metal barrel terminating slightly above the uppermost position of the piston. a sleeve seated on. said barrel above the piston and formed of metal having a higher conductivity than said barrel. and a cast metal head seated on said sleeve. said head having intake and exhaust valves mounted therein.
