Abstract
241,362. Short, H. O. Sept. 19, 1924. Hulls; frames and framing.-An arrangement for framing hulls for flying boats comprises a number of annular transverse metal frames 1, and secured beneath each frame is a sheet metal diaphragm 6 the lower edges of which are at a suitable dihedral angle and extend on each side of a central keel 18. The lower edges of the diaphragms 6 are constructed with outwardly-extending concave curves and extending backwards to the frames 1 in reverse curves 10 which conjoin with the annular frames 1 somewhat below the level of the centres of the same. The sheet metal plating 4 is carried round the whole of the outside of the frames 1 and also outside the diaphragms, whereby a double-bottom is provided, the plates overlap on the frames and diaphragms. The outward extensions of the frames 6 are provided with rubbing-pieces of U-section. The frames 1 are built up of abutting hoops 2, 3 of angle section between which is riveted an annular stiffening ring 5. Further angles are riveted to the lower portions of the angles 2, 3 and diaphragms 6 are riveted between their abutting edges. The diaphragms terminate in flattened extensions to which the exterior plating is riveted.
