Abstract
240,685. Garvie, D. Dec. 24, 1924. Clutches, free-wheel.- A connecting - element, such as a ball or block, in continuous engagement with a sinuous groove or cam of uniform cross-section on one member is carried between abutments on the other member, being freely moved to and fro over one abutment during overrunning, but engaging the other immovably during drive. Three or other number of balls 9, Fig. 1, lie partly in axial slots 7 in the flange 6 of a hub member 5 and partly in a sinuous groove 4 in a sprocket ring 2 carried by ball bearings on rings 10 secured on the member 5. During overrunning, the balls 9 reciprocate idly over the plain faces of the slots 7, but engage pockets 8 in the opposte faces during drive. The pockets 8 may be replaced by an inclined face or V-shaped projection or, as shown in Fig. 6, by a sloping face producing a radial jamming-action. The groove 4 may be replaced by a sinuous rib 16, Fig. 10, engaging a block 17, one side of which is shaped to engage one of the forms of abutment on the slot 7. In another modification, the sinuous groove is formed in one lateral face of the sprocket ring 2, the slots 7 'being radial. Cubes or prisms may be employed in place of the balls 9.
