Abstract

246,677. Garvie, D. Feb. 17, 1925. Clutches, free-wheel. - In ratchet gearing and freewheel clutches of the kind set forth in Specification 240,685, the ball bearings 12, Fig. 2, for the sprocketring 2 are transferred to the inner periphery of the side plates 5, 10, one of which may be made integral with the ring 2, the other being screwed thereto and locked in adjusted position by one or more grub-screws 13, which press on the central flange 3 of the ring 2. This method of locking the ring 10 dispenses with the need for packing-pieces. Bearing races are formed in the parts 5, 10 and in the angles of the T-shaped inner ring 8. The abutment surface 17, with which the clutch ball &c. 14 engages during forward drive, may be of any of the shapes described in the above-mentioned prior Specification, but is formed on an independent block 16 Fig. 3, inserted axially in a slot in the flange 9 of the ring 8, so that the lateral thrust due to jamming is taken directly by one of the side plates 5, 10 and the necessity for a special aperture for inserting the ball &c. 14 during assembly is obviated. Where the sinuous cam or groove 4 acts radially, it is formed on the inside lateral face of the integral side plate 5.
