Abstract

869,082. Ratchet clutches. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 15, 1959 [Oct. 2, 1958], No. 31393/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A one-way clutch comprises a series of arcuate cam shoes 18 floating between concentric outer and inner races 12, 10 on the driving and driven members 14, 16, each shoe being formed with a wedge surface 20 between which and the outer race 12 a roller 22 is located. Upon rotating member 14 clockwise the rollers 22, assisted by springs 24, wedge between surfaces 20 and the outer race 12, thus forcing the shoes 18 into frictional engagement with the inner race 10 to connect members 14, 16. During over-running the shoes 18 are carried round with the member 14, centrifugal force lifting them clear of the inner race.
