Abstract

863,930. One-way clutches. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 21, 1957 [July 25,1956], No. 23730/57. Class 80 (2). In the one-way clutch or brake described in the main Specification 826,548, sprags 22, arranged in sets of four in openings in a cage 10, and biased inwardly by a surrounding garterspring 42, are retained in the cage by shoulders 52 on the sprags and 54 on the cage. The cage openings are formed between cross-bars 20 of similar D-section to the sprags. A folded spring 46, to maintain sprag alignment, is arranged between the flat face of a bar 20 and the adjacent sprag and seats in a recess 48 in the bar 20 to prevent it being fully compressed. The springs 46, bars 20 and sprags 22 are notched to receive the garter-spring 42. As in the main Specification 526,548, a radius 38 through the centre of gravity 36 of the sprags 22 passes to the left of the outer contact point 40 so that centrifugal force provides an additional wedging moment. A spring-ring 56, seated in grooves in the cage 10 and outer race 12, tends to make the cage rotate frictionally with that race.
