Magnetic instruments; diaphragms.-A telephone receiver or hornless loud-speaker is constructed with a large dished diaphragm of thin metal or alloy, preferably aluminium alloy of thickness between 0.001 and 0.003 of an inch, provided with an annular corrugation d<1> near its periphery where it is clamped between rings c supported by pillars b from a 'base-plate a all arranged in a casing. The convex side of the diaphragm is directed towards the electromagnets h which are mounted on a plate j adjustable to and from the base a, and a sheet-iron armature e is secured to the convex side of the diaphragm by a screw f. Cotton wool, swans down, &c. may be packed between the diaphragm and the base or an annular disc mounted on the pillars b. A guard of wire work or stamped metal which may be backed with fine gauze may be placed at the front of the casing.
