Abstract
239,926. Dowsett, H. M., and Tilley, H. B. June 17, 1924. Wire resistances, embedded and cored.-A resistance is formed by winding an enamelled wire 2, Fig. 3, which is also covered with an absorbent material such as silk or cotton upon a silica, porcelain, resistant-glass or other refractory core 1, impregnating the absorbent with enamel and stoving and finally covering the resistance so formed with another coating of enamel 6 and stoving at a temperature above the normal working temperature. A piece of pliable copper braid 3 is lashed to the core 1 by bare copper wire 4 and forms an end connector, the resistance wire 2 being entwined with the wire 4 after being bared for a length of about two feet. The braid is then turned back and soldered as shown at 5 with high melting solder. A clip 7, Fig. 2, is secured to each end of the unit bv means of a clamping screw 8 to which the braid is attached. An alloy having a negligible temperature coefficient is preferably employed for the resistance, and several coatings of enamel may be applied to the unit; the final stoving however, to avoid cracking the enamel should be conducted at about 230‹-270‹ C. The refractory core may be rendered impervious to moisture by glazing.
