Abstract
The terpene oil remaining when the acid is removed from the pinene hydrochloride in the synthesis of camphor is treated with sulphuric or other acid, or an alkali, or a halogen, or air or other oxidizing agent, whereby there are produced sweet-smelling drying oils of higher boiling point. The oils obtained by the halogen treatment also serve as solvents. Catalysts may be present and raised temperatures and pressures may be used. In an example the oil is boiled with caustic potash lye in presence of mercury or copper. The mass is washed with dilute acid, dried, and fractionally distilled. The products are suitable substitutes for linseed oil. Other catalysts specified are p mercuric chloride, copper oxide, lead oxide, and iron chloride.ALSO:The terpene oil remaining when the acid is removed from the pinene hydrochloride in the synthesis of camphor, is treated with sulphuric or other acid, or an alkali, or a halogen, or air or other oxidizing agent, whereby there are produced sweet-smelling drying oils of higher boiling point. The oils also serve as solvents. The treatment may take place at atmospheric or higher temperatures and pressures and in presence of a catalyst. In an example the oil is boiled with about 1/10 its volume of caustic potash lye of 50 per cent cent strength in presence of mercury or copper. The mass is washed with dilute acid, dried, and fractionally distilled. The products are suitable substitutes for linseed oil. Other catalysts specified are mercuric chloride, copper oxide, lead oxide, and iron chloride.
