Abstract

259,293. Byrnes, C. P. July 6, 1925. Partial oxidation products of aliphatic hydrocarbons.-Solvents for nitrocellulose and varnish gums are obtained by dissolving out, for example by means of dilute alcohol, the more highly oxidized substances, such as esters, and aldehydes and ketones when present, in the partial oxidation products of aliphatic hydrocarbons produced as described in Specifications 138,113, 173,750 and 209,128. Before the above treatment the oxidation products may undergo fractional distillation, and free acids be removed by adding an esterifying catalyst, such as hydrochloric acid. Aldehydes and ketones are removed from the alcohol solution by means of sodium bisulphite. The alcohol is recovered by distillation after the addition of a dehydrating agent. The solvent may be purified by a second extraction with dilute alcohol.
