Facilitating changing speed. - In change-speed gearing suitable for vehicles, auxiliary friction gearing is employed to bring gear and clutch teeth to similar speeds prior to engagement, such friction gearing being selected by the speed gear control and brought into action by the main clutch pedal. In the arrangement described with reference to Figs. 2 and 3, there is a driving-shaft 28, a driven shaft 2 with slidable gears 23, 24 upon it, and a lay shaft 3, and the auxiliary friction gearing 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 is adapted to connect an extension 2a of the shaft 2 to the lay shaft so as to speed up the lay shaft gears by effort derived from the vehicle road wheels. The change gears 23, 24 are selected by axial movement of a hand-lever 22 and brought into mesh by subsequent pivotal movement of the same lever. The axial movement of the lever 22 through a linkage 20, 19 also serves to selectively move the set of friction gears 10, 11, 12. In changing speed, the main clutch is disengaged and the lever 22 is moved axially only. The clutch pedal 17<a> is then further depressed, which through a linkage 16, 15 brings the selected friction gears into action by lateral movement of a shaft 5. This lateral movement also brings a pair 7, 4 into engagement whereby the lay shaft 3 is driven to speed up the gear or clutch teeth, which are. then enmeshed by the pivotal movement of the lever 22. The main clutch is then let in, which disengaged the friction gearing. A four-speed arrangement is described. In a modification, conical friction stepby-step auxiliary gearing is employed.
