Abstract

238,379. Aktiebolaget Reduktor, and Hedin, J. E. Aug. 26, 1924. Barrels.-A portion of the bore at the muzzle of a rifled barrel is hardened to a suitable depth, the remainder of the barrel being unhardened. 'In an example, the barrel is made of steel having a carbon percentage of 0.6; a plug of asbestos or the like is inserted into the barrel leaving 0.5 cm. of the bore free at the muzzle; this muzzle portion is then heated rapidly on the inside, suitably by an acetylene-oxygen flame, to a temperature of about 800‹ C. and is then cooled by oil applied preferably in the form of a jet. In a modification, the muzzle portion of the bore is made of a more resistant material than the rest of the barrel.
