Drawings to Specification. Vacuum tubes. - Discharge tubes contain very small quantities of electropositive gas, such as hydrogen, which are partly occluded in the electrodes and walls of the tube, disintegration of the cathode and noises in speech reproduction due to gas ionization being diminished. The gas may in part combine chemically with the coated incandescent cathode or other electrodes or parts of the tube and may reappear during the operation of the tube, positive ions being formed; for example, calcium or calcium oxide forms thermionically active calcium hydride with hydrogen at high temperatures. The tube is highly evacuated and the gas is introduced into, or produced within, the tube, surplus gas being pumped out. With gas at 10-5 mm. of mercury, the anode current-grid voltage characteristic is straight. Wolfram cathodes are referred to.
