Abstract

237,649. Cole, E. Z. April 29, 1924. Locking nuts.-In a lock-nut of the type having a hub or integral collar provided with ratchet teeth which are engaged by a pawl, or co-operating teeth, on a washer splined to the bolt and in which means are provided for keeping the pawl &c. in engagement with the teeth on the nut, a cap 9 is providing having lugs 10 carrying pins 11 which engage in bayonet slots 12 on the nut 1. A coiled spring 13 is inserted between the cap 9 and the washer 4 to keep the washer up to its work. In a modification, the cap is provided with resilient arms which engage in an annular groove in the collar of the nut, and the spring and washer are replaced by soft metal washer which engages a serrated face on the nut. An alternative cap is shown and described which completely houses the spring and washer. In a further modification, Fig. 2, the coiled spring and washer are replaced by a split spring washer 34 one end 38 of which is bent downwards to engage the teeth on the nut, and longitudinal passageways 44 are provided to facilitate the arrangement of shoes 42 on the. cap with the annular groove 32 in the collar of the nut. Offsets 45 are provided to prevent accidental disengagement of the cap.
