Abstract
237,380. Caley, E. C., and Downs, C. May 14, 1924. Brick-laging machines.-Apparatus for laying bricks, blocks, &c. comprises a metal frame 1, Fig. 1, larger than the house &c. to be built and a carriage 18, capable of being moved to any position in the frame. carrying a shoot 21, Fig. 4, down which the bricks pass, a swinging platform 28 which receives the bricks from the shoot, a plunger device 41 with gripping means for taking the bricks from the swinging platform and laying them. and a hopper 82 for holding and applying mortar. The carriage 18 is mounted to move along a frame 16 mounted to move along in a direction at right-angles to its length in an horizontal frame 14, which itself is vertically movable in the main frame 1. The shoot is divided bv a longitudinal partition to form two channels for bricks. The laying device, shown separately in Fig. 15, is suspended by a chain 58, Fig. 4. from a weighted lever 59 and when required is pushed down by a handle 55. The handle is attached to a lever 51 which by means of a slide 44 and rollers 45, 46 actuates brick-gripping devices 47, 48. In operation, when the platform 28 is pulled forwards, from the position shown in Fig. 4, catches at the bottom of the shoot are released and two bricks fall on the platform and are carried forwards to a position beneath the laying device. When the laying device is depressed by the handle 55 the bricks 28 are gripped between flange plates 42, Fig. 4. and the gripping devices 47, 48; the platform 28 is then swung rearwards and the bricks laid on the course below; when the handle is released it is pressed upwards by a spring 56 and the gripping devices are automatically released, whereupon the laying device is raised by the weighted lever 59. A vertical guide-plate 93, Fig. 4, side rollers which press the bricks against the guide-plate, and top rollers 94, ensure even laying of the bricks. Mortar is applied from a hopper 82 having a sliding shutter which is automatically opened and closed when the laying device is operated. A transverse shoot 62, Fig. 4, may also be provided to supply header , bricks together with a sliding device 63 for receiving and laying them. The Provisional Specification states that suitable excavating apparatus may be combined with the travelling platforms for cutting or levelling the foundation trenches.
