828,732. Tiling. NASUTE, R. March 26, 1957 [March 26, 1956; Aug. 7, 1956], No. 9863/57. Class 20(4) An apparatus for laying wall tiles comprises a box-shaped carrier 1 having a collapsible plate 3 on which the tiles are laid face downwards and held in position and a grid, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), which is placed over the tiles and filled with mortar so that after removing the grid the assembly of tiles and mortar can be applied to a surface, the collapsible plate and carrier then being released. The plate 3 is perforated so as to pass over blocks 2 which are attached to the box 1 and are situated to coincide with the apices of the tiles to be laid. The plate 3 is movable vertically by having attached beneath two angle bars 6, 7 in which move rods 8 attached to transverse plates 9 carried at their base by rods 10 which are housed in bearings 11 attached to the box. The plates are connected to a rod 12 which is pivoted to a transverse rod 14 with a cranked end 15 which when turned causes the plates 9 to pivot on the rods 10 and causes the plates 3 to release the tiles which are frictionally held by partitions 4 attached to the plate. In a modification, Figs. 6, 7 a frame 101 has a central recess 102 in which is housed a mechanism for controlling clamping elements 103, 104 consisting of adjacent side angle bars. The angle bars are connected to rods 105, 106 which are moved longitudinally by a member 107, which slides obliquely in line of the studs 110, 111 which engage in slots 108, 109. The member 107 is actuated by a lever 112 engaging a pin 115. The lever is pivoted at 113 and terminates in a handle 116 which may be secured in position by ratchet-like members 117, 119. As before, a grid is placed over the tiles and mortar spread. The grid is removed and the assembly placed on the surface to be covered. Movement of handle 116 causes members 103, 104 to release the tiles and the apparatus may be removed. Alternatively, the members 105, 106 may be spring loaded and withdrawn by a cable 123 to which they are attached and which passes over a central stud and round a pulley shown in dotted lines. Operation of the handle 116 causes releasing movement of members 103, 104.
