Abstract

237,319. Mason, S. G. H. Dec. 9, 1924. Signs.-Guide posts, shop notices, and number plates for vehicles in which the indication is displayed on the translucent surface c<4> of a casing, are provided behind such surface with a curved or partly curved light diffusing surface e mounted with the axis of curvature of the curved part transverse to the longitudinal axis of the casing, the light diffusing surface being dull or matt. The light is placed at the edge of the sign, and may consist of one or more lamps, or an elongated lamp according to the length of the edge of the sign. In the case of a guide or finger post the lamp or lamps may be within a lantern near the top of the post. The lantern b is cast with lugs &c. for attaching the sign-arms and may be formed with openings in which is displayed the name of the place at which the post is erected. Part of the light may also be allowed to pass vertically into a globe &c. fastened on the top of the lantern and having road signs shown thereon. Two diffusing surfaces, back to back, may be placed in each arm of the sign, for giving indications in opposite directions, and in the case of a hotel or like sign, the number of such sur- 'faces may be increased according to the shape and dimensions of the sign. A vehicle number plate is provided with a red panel adjacent to the light.
