236,352. Garrett, F. A., and Ransomes, Sims, & Jefferies, Ltd. May 29, 1924. Heating by indirect contact of gas-engine exhaust; return tube boilers. - A steam generator adapted to be direct fired or heated by exhaust gases from an internal-combustion engine, comprises two sets of fire tubes, one only being used when heating by exhaust gases, and both being used when heating by direct firing or by both means. Two drums 1, 2 are arranged one above the other, the upper having fire tubes 3, and the lower having fire tubes 5 and a furnace tubs 4. A connecting-box 6 has a branch 7 leading from the engine exhaust, and the waste gases pasthrough the tubes 3. When direct firing is in operation, alone or in conjunction with the waste gases, the combustion products pass through the tubes 5, 3, in series. The steam and water spaces are connected by tubes 9, 10.
