236,323. Astington, E. C., and Flann, E. T. April 26, 1924. Closures completed by outstanding packing rings; packing rings for stoppers.-A packing ring E, Fig. 3, for obtaining a fluid-tight joint between a vessel and its stopper is mounted on the stopper or vessel and is formed with a bent or cupped portion E<2> whch co-operates therewith to enclose an air cushion, the ring being flattened when the stopper is inserted in the vessel, but retaining the air cushion within it. As shown, the ring is secured to the vessel by a flange E<1> which embraces the upper edge thereof and also serves as a buffer between adjacent vessels. When applied to straight edged vessels such as casings for electric accumulators, the corners of the ring are reinforced by a horizontal web. A head or rib E<3> is formed on either ring or the stopper to co-operate with a corresponding groove F<1> on the stopper or ring and the stopper is bevelled at F<2> to ensure the flattening of the ring. In modifications the ring C, Fig. 1 may be secured to the stopper as by a flange C<1> and be provided with a turned-in edge C<2>, or it may be formed on a rubber sheet covering the undersurface of the stopper.
