Closures completed by outstanding p a ck i n g rings; retaining-devices in receptacle neck above closure.-The lower edge of the lid of a milk churn or other vessel is formed with means for making a fluid-tight joint. Circumferential grooves C<2>, C<3>, Fig. 1, are formed on the lid, the higher one being adapted to register with a similar groove B<1> on the flared mouth of the can when the lid is closed. Above and below the groove B<1> are lips or projections B<2>, B<3> respectively. A ring D of elastic material such as rubber and preferably of circular section is placed in the lower groove C<3>, and on applying pressure to force down the lid the ring rolls over the body projection B<2> and becomes transferred to the upper lid groove C<2>, Fig. 2, lying compressed between that and the groove B<1> on the body. Recesses E<1> are provided in the flanged edge of the lid, through which recesses short levers can be inserted to prise up the lid when required to open the vessel. The invention may be applied to a lid adapted to fit outside the body, which would then be provided with the two grooves, the lid having a single groove. The lid may have additional securing means comprising spring catches H arranged behind the recesses E<1> and adapted to engage under an internal lip G formed at the mouth of the body. The spring catches can be pressed back by means of the levers introduced into the recesses E<1> to prise open the lid.
